Budget tier: £60,000 – £90,000
At this level you're looking at a used Mercedes Sprinter base (typically 3–5 years old) with a competent but not bespoke conversion. You'll get functional electrical systems (likely 100–200Ah lithium), basic thermal insulation, a fixed bed, and a simple kitchen. The conversion itself may be partially flat-pack cabinetry. Build time at this tier is typically 6–8 weeks.
What you sacrifice: custom cabinetry, advanced electrical systems, off-road upgrades, premium upholstery, and the kind of engineering attention that matters in remote locations.
Mid-range: £90,000 – £120,000

The Outpost tier. What drives the cost difference?
The single biggest factor is labour. A quality van conversion is profoundly labour-intensive — more so than it appears from the outside. The difference between a £70,000 conversion and a £130,000 one is usually 200–400 additional hours of skilled workshop time, not more expensive materials.
The second factor is electrical specification. Going from 200Ah to 600Ah, and from solar-only to a full shore power, alternator charging, and battery-to-battery system, roughly doubles the electrical component cost and increases installation time significantly.
Third: cabinetry. Flat-pack and sheet material cabinetry is serviceable. Solid hardwood, milled in-house, with hidden fixings and soft-close mechanisms, is a different product — and priced accordingly.
