Cold Weather Vanlife: What Actually Matters
Most advice about winter vanlife is wrong. Here's what we've learned from building and testing cold-weather capable vans for the last five years.
The internet will tell you that winter vanlife is about having the right sleeping bag and parking near a gym. This is not wrong, exactly. It's just not where the real decisions live.
The real decisions happen at the insulation layer, the heating system choice, the vapour barrier design, and the window specification. These are build decisions. By the time you're shivering in a lay-by in February, it's too late to revisit them.
Insulation
Thermal mass is not the same as insulation value. A thick foam layer with poor barrier properties will eventually become a cold damp sponge. We use closed-cell spray foam in structural voids — it fills gaps, adds rigidity, and has zero moisture absorption. In panel areas we use Thinsulate, which performs consistently across temperature ranges and doesn't compress over time.
The floor is often neglected. Heat loss through the floor is significant when parked on cold ground. We build a raised floor with an air gap and a thermal break between the subframe and the flooring surface. It adds 40mm of height and significant warmth.
Heating
The question we get most often: diesel heater or hydronic?
For most builds, a Webasto or Espar diesel heater is excellent. It's proven, parts are available globally, and it heats the cabin quickly. For builds where the client wants underfloor heat distribution, hot water integration, and near-silent operation, hydronic is worth the additional cost.
What we'd never do: rely solely on propane heating in a sealed van. Carbon monoxide is not a risk worth taking for the sake of saving installation cost.
Condensation
Condensation is not a sign that your van is poorly built. It's a sign that humans exhale. The question is whether your van manages it or fights it.
Ventilation beats insulation every time when it comes to moisture control. A quality roof vent — we spec the Maxxair Deluxe on most builds — on a timer, running at low speed overnight, will remove more moisture than any amount of additional vapour barrier.
Cook outside when you can. One pasta dinner produces more moisture than a night of breathing.
Final thought
The best winter van is the one you'd still choose to live in during summer. Cold weather capability shouldn't come at the cost of livability in other seasons. If a build feels oppressively dark, cramped, or noisy because someone over-indexed on thermal performance, that's a failed brief.
Build for the full year. Test in the worst conditions. Trust the systems.
